All-Music Guide Biography
Although he succeeded as a singer, musician, songwriter, and film and
stage actor, David Bowie's chief artistic accomplishment may have
been his astute manipulation of his own image as a star. When he
achieved international fame in the early 70s, Bowie brought a new,
highly conscious approach to stardom that involved the frequent
creation of new personae. No wonder that when he made his film acting
debut in 1976, he seemed so good at it: acting was what a large part
of his career was about. Born in Brixton, South London, as David
Jones, the singer was already playing in bands by his late teens. He
changed his name to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees.
His early-60s work was rock and blues oriented, then he turned to an
Anthony Newley-style expressive show-music approach. But his
breakthrough British hit "Space Oddity" (1969) was a folkie ballad
about an astronaut who doesn't come home. By the time of HUNKY DORY
(1971), Bowie had turned again more toward rock, using the first of
many strong collaborators, guitarist Mick Ronson.,It was Bowie's
concept album THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS
FROM MARS (1972) that made him a giant star in England, where he
adopted the image of his fantasy rocker, with bright red hair and
futuristic stage suits. In America, "Space Oddity" became a belated
hit in 1973, the year Bowie "retired" from stage work only to return
in 1974 with an even more elaborate stage show. More an established
star than a real record-seller in the US, Bowie finally hit #1 with
"Fame" (cowritten by John Lennon and Luther Vandross) in 1975. The
late 70s found him collaborating with electronics whiz Brian Eno. He
made a major commercial comeback in 1983 with LET'S DANCE, produced
by ex-Chic coleader Nile Rodgers. Bowie's work in the 80s was
inconsistent, but as late as 1990 he was still able to tour the US,
playing football stadiums. This was supposedly his farewell tour
(again) before he turned full attention to a group project, Tin
Machine. But by 1992 it seemed likely he would return to solo work. ~

------- AMG Album Reviews -------
Rocks harder than ZIGGY STARDUST ... but flirts pretty closely at
times with cabaret death (courtesy of pianist Mike Garson). "Watch
That Man" is a fine rocker that manages to draw inspiration from the
Stones' EXILE ON MAIN STREET, while not totally abandoning the
tight-assed rhythmic stiffness inherent in the glam sound. Other
highlights: "Jean Genie," "Cracked Actor," and "Panic in Detroit." ~

------- AMG Album Reviews -------
I must admit that I approached this disc with some trepidation,
knowing that David Bowie had collaborated once again with producer
Nile Rodgers. Back in 1983, the same team concocted the sterile dance
music of (ironically his best-selling) LET'S DANCE album. As a major
admirer over the years of Bowie's chameleon epics and more
experimental forays, I was in no mood for a LD reprise. I'm pleased to
report that my fears were unfounded.
While modern dance tones do lay the foundation, Black Tie White Noise
owes much of its rhythmic debt to the icy Euro atmosphere of Station
To Station. The clipped beat of that album's Stay and Golden Years
permeate his cover of Cream's I Feel Free (guitar solo courtesy of
former Spiders From Mars bandmate Mick Ronson) and surface elsewhere
almost as a recurring theme. Even echoes of the radical Low emerge on
first single "Jump They Say" -- a song equally evocative of Bowie's
track-record for exploring musical hinterlands as it is a reflection
on the suicide of his stepbrother.
Bowie feeds off collaborators aplenty on BTWN -- besides the
much-missed Ronson, former ivory-tickler Mike Garson splashes his
trademark Diamond Dogs cascades all over the instrumental Looking For
Lester. Canadian guitarist Tony "Wild T" Springer offers the disc's
most biting solo on a mutual-admiration-society cover of The Smiths' I
Know It's Going To Happen Some Day, and Al B. Sure! duets soulfully on
the Marvin Gaye-ish title track -- a lucid take on the current state
of race relations ("Getting my facts from a Benetton ad/Looking
through African eyes/Lit by the glare of an L.A. fire..."). Jazz great
Lester Bowie gives great horn on several tracks, his trumpet blaring
through the mix like a wild elephant smashing through a jungle
clearing.
Despite the welcome freshness and diversity of the pop/jazz/soul/dance
brew -- and the presence of Ronson and Springer -- BTWN goes too far
the opposite extreme of Bowie's Tin Machine project, suffering from a
disappointing lack of guitars. Bowie's treated saxophone just doesn't
fill the gap.
In the long run, this is not going to dislodge Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin
Sane, Station To Station, or even Low when I crave that Bowie fix. But
it's undoubtedly the Thin White Duke's strongest outing in over ten
years ... one that will not gather the dust of its recent
predecessors. BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE deserves to rekindle interest in
one of rock's most interesting personalities. ~ Roch Parisien

... the most comprehensive collection of Bowie's hits available to
date.... ~ Dave Marsh, Rock & Roll Disc.
Except for the substitution of a "Fame '90" remix over the original #1
hit, this is a great sampling of big cuts from all of Bowie's many
phases, from "Space Oddity" to "Ashes to Ashes." While Bowie has had
some classic albums, the uninitiated should start here. ~ Rick Clark

Ambitious smudge of an album. Nevertheless contains some standouts in
the lean, riff-heavy hit "Rebel Rebel," the fatalistic futurism of
"1984" (an early discoish harbinger of his Thin White Duke era), and
the title track. ~ Rick Clark

Echos LOW's half-sung/half-instrumental approach, this time with
longer songs (given a maniacal musical accompaniment by King Crimson's
Robert Fripp) and chillingly desolate soundscapes. The brilliant title
track features one of Bowie's most passionate performances. Those who
like discordant rock should be in heaven with "Beauty and the Beast,"
"Joe the Lion," and "Blackout." ~ Rick Clark
The music packs an undeniably visceral punch, but mostly it's due to
the monumental title track, which is both Bowie's most touching and
reaffirming love song. ~ John Floyd, Rock & Roll Disc.

... a highly melodic collection of songs that still sound
contemporary. Many Bowie fans consider this their favorite, and
rightly so. ~ Dave Marsh, Rock & Roll Disc.
This followup to THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD found Bowie lightening his
sound considerably. Some of his most memorable songs are found on this
classic: the catchy pop classic "Changes" (a theme song of sorts), the
beautifully expansive "Life on Mars," the moody dynamics of
"Quicksand," "The Bewlay Brothers," and "Oh, You Pretty Things." ~

Bowie guns for big pop success and gets it on this outing, somehow
deftly sidestepping appearances of being a sell-out. The title track,
"China Girl," and "Modern Love" achieve international chart success.

This is the third and final volume of the famed David Bowie and Brian
Eno trilogy. Not as bleak and heavy-handed as LOW and HEROES, LODGER
is a playful, innovative recording that offers a glimpse of Bowie's
world view, both philosophically and musically. He made good use of
the William Burroughs cut-up method of composition while writing the
lyrics and the usual Bowie backup band of this period switched
instruments for many of the tracks. "Move On" is actually "All the
Young Dudes" played backwards! This excellent record, which contains
the hits, "Boys Keep Swinging" and "D.J.," has been sadly underrated,
but to my ears it sounds even better than it did in 1979. The CD
version includes "I Pray Ole," an outtake from the original session,
as well as a 1988 rerecording of "Look Back in Anger." ~ Jim Whalen,
Roundup Newsletter.
The third installment with Eno returns Bowie to a more conventional
(but not necessarily more commercial) song structure. Production isn't
so sharp sounding as HEROES, but it has many engaging moments,
particularly the hopeful "Fantastic Voyage" and the goofy "D.J.," plus
"Boys Keep Swinging," and the hyperdrive of "Look Back in Anger." ~

On LOW, Bowie didn't simply scribble patchy sketches of cornball
character vignettes (e.g. "Ziggy Stardust"), or admonish apocalyptic
Orwellian doom (e.g. "Diamond Dogs"). Instead, he examined the excess
and decay of the jet-set stardom he was personifying and the tolls it
had taken on his personality. ~ John Floyd, Rock & Roll Disc.
The first of several efforts with ex-Roxy Music sound painter Brian
Eno, LOW is a willful departure from Bowie's pop persona. Short songs
make their point and get out of the way on the first half, followed by
four dense synth-instrumental soundscapes. ~ Rick Clark

... a brain-crunching death rock collection, featuring a strange and
unnatural-sounding production.... ~ Dave Marsh, Rock & Roll Disc.
After the theatrical acoustic leanings of SPACE ODDITY, Bowie
undertook a dark foray into British hard rock that at times attempted
Cream-style free-for-alls, particularly "She Shook Me Cold." The
strangely dense, bass-heavy production (courtesy of Tony Visconti),
coupled with Bowie's disturbing imagery, provided some powerful
moments. Musically, Tin Machine's discordant roots can be found here.
One of Bowie's better efforts. ~ Rick Clark

The arrangements are tougher, the band rocks out, and his vocals are
grittier. The CD is pure state-of-the-art crystalline sound. The
Japanese version of the disc, while hard to come by, provides one
rewarding extra song that is easily worth an extra ten bucks to a
non-collector. ~ Todd Rosenstock, Rock & Roll Disc.

------- AMG Album Reviews -------
Bowie covers a selection of personal favorite songs from the 60s by
the Yardbirds, the Kinks, the Who, Pink Floyd, and more. It's an
affectionate tribute that makes more of a case for Bowie's excellent
taste than for his ability to transcend the original versions.
Contains the hit "Sorrow." ~ Rick Clark

------- AMG Album Reviews -------
This is another clever, thought-provoking effort from the Thin White
Duke. Guitar luminary Robert Fripp plays on almost every track and
Pete Townshend makes a rare guest appearance on "Because You're
Young." This disc also contains one of my favorite Bowie songs, "It's
No Game," a scary anti-fascist rant that features Michi Hirota
reciting the bitter lyrics in frenzied Japanese. Bowie addresses his
own image in "Teenage Wildlife" and resurrects Major Tom for the hit,
"Ashes to Ashes." The CD version features four bonus tracks recorded
during the SCARY MONSTERS sessions: re-recordings of "Space Oddity"
and "Panic in Detroit," a twisted version of the Brecht/Weill
composition, "Alabama Song," and "Crystal Japan," which sounds like an
outtake from the LOW sessions but was written for a Japanese saki
commercial. ~ Jim Whalen, Roundup Newsletter.
One of the better post-LOW efforts. Contains the hits "Fashion" and
"Ashes to Ashes," and the dissonant rocker "It's No Game (Part 1)."
Robert Fripp provides a wonderfully jarring racket on "It's No Game
(Part 1)," the Tom Verlaine-penned "Kingdom Come," and several others.
Pete Townshend guests on "Because You're Young." CD includes four
bonus tracks, a nice version of Kurt Weill and Bert Brecht's "Alabama
Song," an instrumental that could've come off of LOW, and 1979
re-recordings of "Space Oddity" and "Panic in Detroit" of interest
only to hardcore fans ~ Rick Clark

Taking CHANGESBOWIE one step further, SINGLES 1969-1993 collects all
of David Bowie's biggest hits while picking up such over-looked gems
as "Drive-In Saturday" and "Loving the Alien." The comprehensiveness
and quality of the songs make SINGLES the best Bowie compilation
available; fans will be pleased with the inclusion of the complete
lyrics to all of the songs on this two disc set. ~ All-Music Guide

An extravagantly produced 3-CD-plus CDV (video mini-disc) boxed set
that digs deeper than CHANGESBOWIE. This features much previously
unavailable stuff but comes up short on certain primary radio tracks.
Good complement to CHANGESBOWIE, in spite of a little track
duplication. ~ Rick Clark

... a transitional effort from Bowie's earlier work on Decca. It
pointed towards a harder, lyrical approach ... while not totally
shedding his earlier Anthony Newley affectations. ~ Dave Marsh, Rock &
Roll Disc.
Originally titled MAN OF WORDS MAN OF MUSIC, this release was a
transitional effort from Bowie's earlier Anthony Newley affectations
on Decca. Tracks range from the Bob Dylan-influenced future-shock epic
"Cygnet Committee" to lightweight rockers like "Janine." This includes
"Space Oddity," Bowie's first major single and the highlight of this
album. ~ Rick Clark

Despite the fact that he had released a double-live set in late 1975,
Bowie toured the states in 1977 with a killer band featuring
guitarists Adrian Belew and Carlos Alomar and put out another
double-live disc. Bowie played it straight, sticking closely to the
studio versions (except on the extended arrangement of "Breaking
Glass"), and the band was flawless. The set opens with five songs from
THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS and
focuses on material from STATION TO STATION, LOW, and HEROES, with a
version of "Fame" thrown in as well. STAGE isn't as dated as ZIGGY
STARDUST or as quirky as DAVID LIVE. A previously unissued version of
"Alabama Song" is included to round out the collection. ~ Jim Whalen,
Roundup Newsletter.
A great double-disc live document of Bowie's HEROES tour, with Disc 1
focussing on ZIGGY STARDUST and STATION TO STATION material and Disc 2
featuring LOW and HEROES. ~ Rick Clark

A transitional effort that bridges Bowie's clinical pop/disco persona
to the icy psychosis and dissonance of this next phase, working with
Brian Eno. Almost as ill formed as DIAMOND DOGS (particularly the

highlights. ~ Rick Clark

------- AMG Album Reviews -------
Early-70s Bowie in concert (and for me, anyway) at best a period
piece. Consumer warning for fans: The sub-bootleg sonics here make
THE BEATLES LIVE AT THE STAR CLUB sound like DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. ~
Steve Simels, Rock & Roll Disc .
Regarded by many to be Bowie's best album, Bowie took the melodicism
developed on HUNKY DORY and beefed it up with a punchy, rigid,
freeze-dried "rock" setting. It's a perfect setting for Bowie's
concept of a plastic rock star, Ziggy Stardust. THE RISE AND FALL OF
ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS, without a doubt, was an
important defining effort for the glam-rock movement. ~ Rick Clark
