ACLU Announces Congressional Awards;
Metzenbaum, Conyers Receive High ACLU Honor

WASHINGTON -- The American Civil Liberties Union today awarded its
top Washington honor to Senator Howard Metzenbaum and Representative John
Conyers for their work in defense of civil and constitutional rights.
The awards, presented at a banquet in Washington, are given annually.
Past recipients have included Senator Edward Kennedy and Representatives
Howard Berman, Ron Dellums, Don Edwards and Bill Green.
Senator Metzenbaum, a Democrat from Ohio, serves on the Judiciary,
Environment and Public Works, Labor and Human Resources and Intelligence
committees. In announcing his selection, Laura Murphy Lee, the Director of
the ACLU's Washington Office, said that Senator Metzenbaum is known for
his "courage and commitment to the principles and causes he values."
Among his many accomplishments, the ACLU said, are his leadership in
obtaining the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1992, which significantly
strengthened laws banning discrimination in the workplace. The ACLU also
said that Senator Metzenbaum has been a "stalwart leader" in blocking
legislation that would have violated the First Amendment by
Representative John Conyers Jr, a Democrat of Michigan, is chairman
of the Government Operations Committee, the senior member of the
Congressional Black Caucus and the third-ranking member of the House
Judiciary Committee.
"Social justice and economic opportunities are focal points of
Representative Conyers's accomplishments," Lee said, citing, in
particular, his leadership in pressing the Racial Justice Act and the
National Voter Registration Act.
The ACLU also cited his work in pressing for rights of Haitians and
fighting against the death penalty.
Longtime ACLU volunteer Louis P. Dolbeare was also recognized for his
work at the banquet.
