MINUTE OF SILENCE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
1995 GENERAL SESSION
STATE OF UTAH

AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; REQUIRING ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS
TO BEGIN EACH DAY WITH ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE FOR PERSONAL
THOUGHTS OR MEDITATION
This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:
ENACTS:
53A-11-12, Utah Code Annotated 1953
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
Section 1. Section 53A-11-12 is enacted to read:
53A-11-12. Minute of Silence.
(1) Each school district shall adopt policies for the
observance of a minute of silence at the opening of every school
day in all grades in its public schools.
(2) The period of silence shall be for personal thoughts or
meditation in order for teachers and students to prepare
themselves for the activities of the day.
(3) During the period of silence, a class shall not engage
in any other activity.
