AMERICAN ATHEISTS, INC. P O Box 140195 Austin, TX 78714-0195 PRESS RELEASE For release: May 15, 1993 American Atheists, today, contacted every church which had been used for a polling place in the recent elections in Travis County and the City of Austin. Basically American Atheists asked the churches to keep out of the election process, pointing out that voting in church buildings is *the* most egregious possible violation of the doctrine of state/church sepation. "This" said Jon Murray, the president of the organization, "is worse than asking Right-to-Lifers to vote in an abortion clinic." Although making a direct appeal to churches or religious establishments has not, heretofore, been on the agenda of American Atheists, Murray pointed out that public office seekers are "so hungry for the religious vote" that they would permit any violation of the First Amendment and that contacts with voting authorities have proven to be fruitless. "We hope to be able to shame the churches -- if that is possible -- into declining to be used by government on election day," Murray said. *********************************************************************** * * * American Atheists website: http://www.atheists.org * * PO Box 140195 FTP: ftp://ftp.atheists.org * * Austin, TX 78714-0195 * * Voice: (512) 458-1244 Dial-THE-ATHEIST: * * FAX: (512) 467-9525 (512) 458-5731 * * * * Atheist Viewpoint TV: avtv@atheists.org * * Info on American Atheists: info@atheists.org, * * & American Atheist Press include your name and mailing address * * AANEWS -Free subscription: aanews-request@listserv.atheists.org * * and put "info aanews" in message body * * * * This text may be freely downloaded, reprinted, and/other * * otherwise redistributed, provided appropriate point of * * origin credit is given to American Atheists. * * * ***********************************************************************
