argumentum ad baculum (Latin for: argument appealing to the cudgel.) An argument employing an implicit or explicit threat. When in The Godfather the mafioso obeys the instruction to "make him an offer he can't refuse" the mafioso presents an argumentum ad baculum. See Pascal's wager.
