James Madison's _Memorial and Remonstrance_ (1784) was circulated in response to a bill in the Virginia legislature to levy a tax to support "Teachers of the Christian Religion." In it, Madison argues for strict church/state separation. The bill was eventually voted down. Madison's later writings, such as his "Detached Memoranda," also express a strict church/state separation view. -- Jim Lippard Lippard@CCIT.ARIZONA.EDU
