From: Sean McCullough To: Steve Bedard 09-Jul-93 02:13am Subject: A Debate... Hello Steve!! You were saying: > Society has been turning its back on Christianity for the last thirty > years or so. Yet things do not seem to be getting better. > In fact they seem to be getting worse. "I've been turning my back on Tobacco for the last thirty days or so. Yet things do not seem to be getting better. In fact, they seem to be getting worse." Please consider that a society like ours, which has operated by ironclad conformity for several hundred years, WILL have problems for the first century or so after it grants itself the right, as individuals, to make critical life decisions for themselves. And it is well within the memory of many here of mainstream childbearing age, that marriage was virtually mandatory (economic life was a virtual impossibility without marriage as late as the 1960's), singularity was "prima facie" evidence of some sort of sexual deviancy (which was why economic success was essentially denied to the lifelong singletons), etc. And THE factor responsible for this un-healthy, conformance-based, social structure WAS Biblical religion!! The parallel between so-called "Bible-believing" Christianity, and all other ADDICTIONS, is well established. Amerikkkan society is now in WITHDRAWAL from that addiction. Withdrawal, as doubtless you know, begins when the addict takes his/her last dose of the Substance (to which [s]he is addicted). And Amerikkkan society IS now showing many signs of withdrawal. And this is NECESSARY, in order to create a natural selection against those who cannot function as adults without externally applied structure. Such humans are not really fit to live, and they CERTAINLY are not fit to breed! The fit are, of course, such humans as can live both easily and well WITHOUT externally applied structure. The reason things seem so bad right now is that we are witnessing the destructive phase of the natural selection process in disfavor of those humans who require a society based on conformance. Had you been born 100-150 years later, you would have other opinions on the subject, as you would be living in the times when humanity will reap the benefits of this selection. But as you were born just in time to witness the Destructive phase of the selection, this is not the case. Think about it! ataraxia -- Sean
