THE WHITE HOUSE Washington May 24, 1989 I am pleased to extend warm greetings to all who have gathered at the Eighth Annual International Space Development Conference sponsored by the National Space Society. The vast uncharted regions of space hold great promise for mankind. This frontier challenges our desire to explore and unravel secrets of the unknown. As you know, I have established a National Space Council, under the chairmanship of Vice President Quayle. The Space Council will report to me on a wide range of issues that will shape America's space agenda in the decades to come. I encourage you to work with the Space Council to assist in establishing our agenda for opening space to exploration, private enterprise, and eventual settlement. As we prepare America's space agenda for the 21st century, I want to reaffirm my support for the quest to create a spacefaring civilization. That objective, as I stated earlier this year, is not just our ambition, but our destiny. Barbara joins me in sending best wishes for a most enjoyable and productive conference. God bless you. George Bush
