Date: Thu, 3 Nov 1994 22:44:00 -0500 From: paul.brick@canrem.com (Paul Brick) Subject: Q107 "No Quarter" Special I have just finished listening to Q107 (Toronto Radio) "No Quarter" Special which was on for 90 mins. It included new songs (not the entire cd as originally thought) but much of "No Quarter" was played. Steve Warden of Q107 did an interview with Page/Plant in New York in Oct 94. Most of this interview was played along with the "NO Quarter" songs. Here's a bit of the interview... [Steve Warden intro...] "It was arguably the most influential rock band of all time and 14 years after its demise, LZ continues to entrance the original fans and seduce new ones. The untimely death of drummer JB ensured that LZ could never truly get aloft again but against the odds the bands 2 principals ... guitarist JP and vocalist RP have reteamed in 1994." [Intros himself....and proceeds to give Unledded history..ie who is who where it was recorded, etc.] [Warden] "Get ready for a unique and in many ways suprising musical journey, expect the unexpected, to begin....theres no STH no WLL no DYerMaker One thing Unledded is not is obvious ! Let's get started with a song originally introduced on LZ IV.....Four Sticks....Page Plant Unledded !" {Four Sticks is played} [Warden] "Triggered by MTV's pleading for an Unplugged performance...JP & RP finally reunited earlier this year after years of speculation and rumours...Plant was always the one to scoff at the suggestion, arguing that LZ was in the past and that his solo career took presidence, Page even at the time of the ill-fated 1993 project Coverdale Page had actually acknowledged his desire to work with Plant again but it seems to have taken the increasing irrelevance of their careers apart.....for the old Zep co-horts to come together again and so they have...and for now at least their talking about staying together indefinitely...for the record they were adamant that the project not be sold under the LZ banner. And BTW the other surviving LZ member JPJ was not asked to participate in Unledded. P/P will tour in 1995 including what will probably be a full scale Canadian swing hitting at least half a dozen majour centres. There will likely also be a studio album of all new material...you'll hear reference to these issues and a whole lot more in the interview I conducted with them in New York recently, where I found them in excellent humour and apparently thrilled to be together again, after all this time. [Robert Plant] "14 years is along time not to work together and we've collaborated here and there...but I was always super-concious of not being the singer in Led Zep anymore...and not using Led Zep solely as the only sort...of passport to touring and working and singing ....so it's taken this length of time to get back together because we had to have...a new re-fined reason to play together, something that was substancial, dignified and exciting. This project and the way its come about thru the TV situation, thru us dictating the uh...method by which we would work and how we would go about it. It's been really quite an uh...acheivement. And it is really good to do it this way. This is the way to do it...rather than...trekking round the arenas on some kind of tired review. [Jimmy Page] "losing....your crediability as you go....you know...in the long term... you know this is good this is fresh and its new and you know... wer'e opening up a new world musically in every way." [Warden] "I think alot of people will be suprised to what extent youve embraced so called world-music with this and how prominent it is in this particular project and also that youve avoided alot of obvious tunes....how much consideration was given to ....you know...balancing off what you wanted to achieve personally, in terms of ...you know...exploring some new areas and you know....giving people to some degree...what they want....Do you know what I'm getting at ?" [Page] "Well I think in the past wev'e you know...certain constructions of songs and ideas and basic inspirations ....there'd been a thread of world-music there but I mean....it didn't have such a high focus..." [Plant] "...it wasn't called world-music then either, it was called Zeppelin 3 or Four Sticks or Friends or Kashmir or In the Light, In the Evening or Carsoulemba, you know....they just found a name for the fact that anybody who doesn't speak English.. is part of the world-music....POOR BASTARDS ! and they do very well without having to infiltrate our musical society anyway." [Warden] "Has it made you re-think the reputation that you have as the fore fathers of hard rock and heavy metal in this context ?" [Plant] "Well we didn't give ourselves that title and anybody who's ever bought a LZ album...thinking that that was where we were at...must think that Ronnie James Dio is Pat Boone !!!" [Jimmy giggles] "What does it mean ? If you take all these titles and analogies and shove them firmly up the corporate butt hole.....you know...you can leave people to enjoy music for what it is.....it doesn't...theres no boundaries to what we can do......if wer'e inspired it will be good and if were not it will be crap !" [Warden] "How did you go about chosing the material ....how did you go about deciding on what songs you were going to do and as I mentioned....Alot of the obvious songs are not there.." [Plant] "Well there only obvious because you just mentioned hard rock...but at the end of Kashmir in the film and on the record you get....a little bit of Black Dog.... We can play any song we want to play but it just won't sound the way it did ! And that.....surely... is our freedom !" [Warden] "Can you tell me about the new songs.....and is it true that there are a bunch more new songs that are not included on No Quarter ?" [Page...nodding off to sleep] "hhhhhhmmmmmmm ....." [Warden] "the new songs ???" [Plant..laughing like hell] "hahahahaha....Hello Jim.. how are you....hahahaaha.....he's had a long long day." [Page..... starts a humourous dialoge] "he's just fallen asleep in his breakfast...let Robert take over.." [Plant] "no, no, what happened was that he had to take his Trojans (condoms) back because he bought them from the plaza in 69 and he'd forgotten to use them up and he wondered if he could have some fresh ones" [Page is laughing in background] [Page.....taking up the fictional tale] "he got so many of them he'd dislocated his arms carrying them back to the hotel.....to his room....." [Plant..all smiles] "I don't think I can remeber the question." [all of them laugh] [Warden] "new songs" [Plant] "Yeah.....theres loads of new songs.....on the film there's Wonderful One Yallah and Wah Wah.....there's loads......theres...bout....9 more. Some are like....four piece traditional.....you know.....regular combinations of players...and some are different." "they flit all over the place...don't they ? (looking for Jimmy's input) there everywhere, the songs are all different...theres alot of different stuff going on....4 people in a room...turn it up all the way and feel ill.... [Page suddenly chirps in...] "i mean theres such a variety...." [Plant laughs....] "oh...theres Jim" [Page with laughter] "yeah...he's back again.....he just relocated his arm.. actually ... (big laugh from both Jimmy and Robert) [Page] "but theres such a variety thats on this video and will be on the cd anyway ..theres so many different aspects....it's probably quite alot to take in on one view but thats where wev'e always been at anyway as far as you know variety and you know sort of doing different timbres of music." ******************************************************************** There's a bit of the interview....it was alot longer.
