(UPI) _ The leader of West Virginia's Hare Krishna temple said Tuesday he has asked Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to build a Krishna city near the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Swami Kirtanananda Bhaktipada of New Vrindaban in Marshall County said a letter was mailed Tuesday to Moscow asking the Soviet leader to build a "City of God" and bring spiritual and cultural revitalization to the people. "They protect culture, faith and philosophy for the future generations of mankind," Bhaktipada wrote. "We feel that your bold efforts toward revitalization at home and peaceful culture abroad indicate your sincere wish to help the people of the Soviet Union and the people of the entire world." The swami also said he wants Gorbachev to grant pardons to the estimated 25 Soviet Hare Krishnas who were allegedly arrested for practicing their religious beliefs. Bhaktipada said the City of God, complete with gardens and a Krishna temple, should be built at Kiev where Russian Christianity was born 100 years ago. The swami said 11 other such cities are planned throughout the world at important spiritual locations.
