Baldwin Park Poster
I just received this poster from an anonymous source, and I thought
people may be interested in seeing it. It is likely that people will
get a hold of this poster, and take in amongst themselves to copy it
and distribute it throughout Baldwin Park, Los Angeles, Orange
County, and other parts of the Southern California Area.
To date, there are no Spanish translations on the internet, but it
is expected that someone will translate this so the author can
present another flyer.
Look at what the protestors are up against!

DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS!
Please remember that this is not a pace to feed trolls. The SOS
group will post here to attempt to get people to violate the laws.
They will dominate the comment area; do not engage with them.
Organize in your individual groups, and only use this are for
updates, but DO NOT FEED THEM TROLLS!!

-'The SOS group will post here to attempt to get people to violate
the laws."
If posts on an anonymous message board are enough to "make people
violate laws." Then maybe you should rethink who you associate
yourself with. as the old saying goes; if you hang out with dogs,
your bound to get fleas.
but i guess in your world, "workers" are immune from the social
restrictions of the exploitative-capilist-military-industrial-
racist-imperialist-system which denies them their autonomy. As
we all know, only true autonomy can be seen whilist "eliminating"
the capalist/racist/facist/ect vermin. Thus in your scripted
utopia, all men become equal in slavery to the marxist machine.

Repy
I can't speak for the artist, but I have a lot of African American
friends that don't like the color labels because they are not black,
but brown. This may not have anything to do with it though.
As far as the artwork, my suggestion is to go here and read about it:

I thank you for your rational question. To me, good art is thought
provoking, and represents social struggle. I believe that the arch
does that, and it would be a shame if anyone from the SOS group
attacked or vandalized it (they never said they were, but the
claim that it WILL come down).

Not True
1planet...
That flier is just WRONG!
I am a board member of SOS and we DO NOT WANT THE MONUMENT TO
COME DOWN. In fact, we like the structure and don't have a
problem with any of the language except...
the quote from Anzaldua and the "it was better before they
came excerpt.
These are the passages we want removed.
However, the African Americans we have in our group are offended
by the community quote but not enough to call for it to be
removed. Their problem is that it doesn't include the word
black. I personally think that an ideal community that includes
poor isn't ideal but...that's just me.
Please change that flier. It is just beneath this organization
and the fine people I have met here from time to time to just
flat out lie about what our position is on the monument.
Also to clarify, we have common interests!
Most (definitely the leaderhship of this organization) hate BUSH
and would love nothing more than to see him impeached, do not
want the exploitation of illegal labor by MNCs (no benefits and
no living wage), and want the eradication of free trade
agreements like CAFTA and NAFTA.
I am an optimist and I don't see this happening today, but,
perhaps sometime in the future some of our organizations can
work together to defeat some of these common enemies.
Of course we welcome the counter protest on the 25th. We expect
you to be as peaceful as we were at the first one and those of
you that were truly there know that we were. We don't want to
hurt you and we don't want to be hurt.
Please respect our constitutional rights to assemble and protest
freely as we do yours.
BTW-I think a food, dancing, music events sounds great. I do have
contacts that can help make this happen for you. Post here if you
are interested in the information and I will share my email
address with you. I prefer to just work with one person on
this however because of obvious reason.
Cheers!

your fight is wrong
"Wrong" is the only word for it.
The community approved it via some panel of local people, and it
has been a fixture there for over a decade. Now, some outside
group wants to modify it.
That is wrong.
SOS didn't do enough research to learn that Anzaldua, who wrote
the quote, is not a "Reconquista". In fact, Anzaldua had faced
opposition from the more conservative Chicanos, because she was
critical of sexism and anti-gay sentiments within the community.
SOS is foolish for buying into the right-wing hoopla over MEChA.
If you read Gustavo Arrellano's article about MEChA, it's funny,
because the GOP campaign guy who engineered the "mecha attack"
on Bustamante doesn't think MEChA is a threat. He just did it
to scare white voters.
To top it off, they cannot figure out that a lot of Mexican
American people see their actions and speech as racism. Even
their allies say as much, but the SOS cabal just don't seem
to be listening to their minority members. Maybe tokens are
supposed to remain silent, and if they pipe up, they can be
ignored.

An updated flyer will be posted shortly. I emailed the author
of it (I am not the one creating the flyer, I just have agreed
to post it) and she is going to alter it and re-post it. As a
side note, there have been many people on your forums who have
said they want the entire monument removed. One person went so
far as to say that if his truck wasn't so nice, he would crash
into it. He also talked about vandalizing it with buck shots.

trong>Extra Note
It seems that several people think that I am a part of the
administration of la indymedia. As I do report through this
medium, I am not in control of indymedia, nor do I claim to
be. I am a media activist, using this platform to report the
news from the perspective of the protestors. I support
indymedia, and I am thankful that they allow me the use
of their newswire to report. Just wanted to put that out there.

INDYMEDIA: Could you please see to it that the second flyer is
removed so this is the only available one? Though many protestors
maintain that SOS and the MM Project, is racist to its very core,
they were willing to alter the flyer to stay true to the
intentions of the SOS group in Baldwin Park. I hope everyone
is satisfied with this one.

Anti-Globalization
Though some SOSers and almost all IMCers are opposed to CAFTA
and FTAA, it's for different reasons.
Right wingers who oppose NAFTA and FTAA (like Pat Buchanan) are
isolationists. Left-wingers are internationalists and
anti-nationalists.
Left-wing and moderate people generally like the idea of free and
open commerce. What they don't like is exploitation and pollution,
and the race to the bottom. That's what NAFTA and similar
agreements do -- they are a race to the bottom. The main country
advocating for this is the USA. They do this because the labor
movement is weak, and can't rally the votes to seize more power
in the Congress.
After labor's failure against NAFTA, the left had shifted to a
kind of isolationism and hand-wringing, for the most part. The
pressure against NAFTA finally came together in Seattle, when
environmentalists and labor (and internationalists) could finally
agree to oppose NAFTA. These sentiments were backed up by ideas of
universal human rights, or general decency for all mankind.
The right-wing shifts its debate from their brand of
internationalism (invasions, puppet dictators) to isolationism.
Right-wing isolationism is different from the anti-globalization
movement, because the right doesn't worry as much about
conditions in other countries. The idea of "universal human
rights" is anathema to right-wing nationalism. Instead, their
main concern is sovereignty.
The kink in the left-right split is that, recently, labor has
been isolationist, and nationalist. Early in the labor movement,
it had a strong leftist, internationalist current, but, with the
waves of anti-communism that washed over this country, it was
all but eradicated. By the 1960s, union people were beating
up on anti-war protesters. Labor also was very anti-immigrant,
and some unions were racist.
This nationalist streak still exists in the labor movement, but,
as noted above, labor has lost against NAFTA; labor lacks power,
and has shrunken. In fact, labor has mostly shruken since it
went conservative.

SOS Board
I do like the idea of 'de-escalating' this event, and would like
to open up a line of communication to do so. But please, understand:
1. I am only one person. I do not plan these events (though I do
talk to the people that do). I can make suggestions, but I am
only a reporter, nothing more.
2. I do not have the ability to control people. We laugh when you
say that there are spies amongst us, because you are witnessing a
true community 'grass roots' response. There is no central
organization or leadership working against you. There are
several organizations (which you are discovering) that are
opposed to you, and thousands of individuals. I cannot say,
"the group will do X or Y", no one has that power. Joe may be
able to say, "I am the leader, and I have decided we are doing
X", but no one on the anti-SOS side can do that. The reason I
cited the Anarchist on your site is because s/he really hit
the nail on the head, there is no leadership or control to
the anti-SOS side. It is a complete individual reaction,
everyone on their own! It just happens that our side is more
popular because people are generally against you.
3. If you start an email dialogue with me, I will respond, and
I will pass on your ideas to the people who make decisions
about permits and such. I will tell you that the most important
thing for a lot of the people is that your group does not have
access to the people without opposition. The reason people
flanked you in the last protest is that they were placed in
the back of the parking lot, away from anyone but them, and
you were on the street. People took it upon themselves to
take the corners around you, and when the police closed the
streets, they took it all. If protesters are told that they
can have their "party" in a corner, far away from you guys,
it won't fly (no matter what group tries to talk people into
pacifism). They need direct access to your group, in your
area, or the people will ignore organizers, and take it
anyway (like BP1). This is why they are planning to take
your spot an hour before you do.
Lets take this off the news lines and into emails.
1planet1people is already taken, but I was able to set up
this email:
indymedia1planet1people@yahoo.com
Email me and we can start a dialog.
As far as the normal 'hate mail' that Duaine has been flooded
with, I will not respond to any of it. Sorry, but I don't
dance with trolls....
